My dear colleagues,

Spring is on the way again and I hope your year is going well. As we continue to prepare for our next conference this fall, I hope your calendars are set for October 7th, 8th, and 9th. We’re looking forward to hearing from a tremendous speaker and presenter, John DeMado, and also attending many great and well thought out presentations. Please take the time to consider presenting something you do or have learned that might benefit all those that attend. Also, take a few minutes to fill out the “Call for presentations” form attached and get it back to me as soon as possible, but no later than May 1st. Your promptness will be greatly appreciated.

As you consider your topics, ponder what we want students to actually learn in Idaho and how it will benefit our communities. I’m really excited to hear from each presenter soon so we can best organize our time at the conference. You may indicate whether you wish to present Friday or Saturday, but please be flexible, as time slots tend to fill up with those who submit presentations first. We are again looking for foreign film presenters for Thursday night as well. Please use the attached “Call for Presentations” form in this case as well and send it in prior to May 1st.

Don’t forget to nominate that special colleague for our “Teacher of the year” award on Friday night as well. Please refer to the attached form for more details on who should receive this prestigious honor and how to properly nominate them.

I know that this time of the year brings its own unique challenges to each one of us. I hope this newsletter finds you well and willing to come be with us this fall. As I have contemplated my role in serving you this year as President, I feel a bit overwhelmed with the responsibility I bear, but I’m excited to have as many as possible, if not all, come and enjoy our Fall conference. I’ve also taken some time to develop two statements that express our Mission and Vision for the IATLC. Since this is the first attempt at synthesizing what we really are and where we want to go, feel free to comment on them and make suggestions for improvement.

I sincerely hope we see many new faces as well as our familiar friends and companions. Please contact any member of the board if you need further information. The main items to remember are to come to Hillcrest High School and, if you’re coming from out of town, get your reservation at the Holiday Inn Express in Idaho Falls. Tiffany Messick, our hotel representative, has graciously provided some preliminary information for us as you prepare your schedules to stay with us.

I wish to thank my IATLC board for all the help you’ve given me. You guys are the greatest people I’ve had the privilege to associate with. Thanks so very much for your support, kindness, and patience. ¡Adelante, muchachos!

Dave

Mission Statement of the Idaho Association of Teachers of Language and Culture

The Idaho Association of Teachers of Language and Culture provides leadership for all Idaho teachers who have the opportunity to teach a foreign or second language to their students. The Association provides quality professional development activities through annual conferences and workshops. We encourage attendance at other workshops such as those provided by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages or any other body with a legitimate interest in the acquisition of a second language. We will seek funding and grant opportunities to enhance language acquisition in or out of the classroom and promote foreign language learning among Idaho students of all ages.

Vision Statement of the Idaho Association of Teachers of Language and Culture

The Idaho Association of Teachers of Language and Culture will provide all students of any age in Idaho the opportunity to learn another language and enable them to experience another culture. We will strive to maintain and improve current programs and expand into areas where foreign languages are not currently being taught so all Idaho learners may benefit from the opportunities and advantages that other languages and cultures offer.

3.      Se tenir au courant des dernières publications.

IATG  Idaho Association of Teachers of German

Fruehling 2004

Liebe Kollegen/Kolleginnen!

I am pleased to still be serving as the chapter president for Idaho and that I have had the opportunity to get to know many of our teachers around the state.  I especially encourage those of you who have not renewed your membership in the AATG/IATG to do so as soon as possible.  The national chapter has changed the membership year to run January-December, instead of school-year membership as it was in the past.  Your membership in the state and national chapter helps us conduct workshops and the like.  Go to http://aatg.org for more information.

I was very happy to see many familiar faces at the October Conference in Nampa and also a few new ones as well.  We were lucky to have such great presenters, including Dr. Walter Suess from Western Washington University and the Goethe Northwest Trainernetzwerk, our own Anne Hay, Jim Reece, Linda Zornik and Dr. Craig Nickish.  This year’s conference will be held in Idaho Falls, October 7, 8, and 9, 2004.  I am looking forward to meeting more of our colleagues from the eastern side of the state during conference.   Send your movie suggestions for the movie night on October 7th to dsteiner@boisestate.edu. Please consider conducting a session at conference as well.

In addition to the October Conference, I met with Ekkehard Sprenger, our Goethe Fachberater this past fall and we would like to start a few new programs in cooperation with the Goethe Institut and the Northwest Trainernetzwerk.  Some ideas on the table are instituting a “German Day” for high school students at Boise State University, a fall Immersion Workshop Weekend for teachers (tentative dates for future planning, 2nd or 3rd weekend in September, perhaps in McCall), publishing a quarterly chapter newsletter (most likely via E-mail) and  starting a chapter website.  Both the newsletter and the website would help keep all of us our “weitlaeufig Bundesstaat” a little closer together.  Do these sound like do-able chapter projects?  Please let me know.

We hope to be hearing soon about the new German professors who will be joining the faculties of both Boise State and Idaho State Universities.  I hope to have them both present sessions at the fall conference.

Mit freundlichen Gruessen!

Diana Steiner
