Francophone
Demographics of Idaho
Idaho has over 3400 French, French Creole and Cajun French speaking
residents.
In 2000, 47,000 Idaho residents claimed French
or French Canadian Ancestry.
French Moments in Idaho History
1803 - The Louisiana Territory purchased by the United States from France
for $15 million.
1805 - Toussaint Charbonneau, a French-Canadian trapper and trader, arrives in
Idaho with Lewis and Clark expedition. His wife was Sacajawea,
member of Idaho's Lemhi Shoshoni
band.
1810
- François Payette, French-Canadian fur trader, arrived
at the mouth of the Columbia River.
Before
1812 - "Boise" named through description of French Canadian fur
trappers as a wooded area.
1815 - A band of nineteen Iroquois migrated from eastern Canada to Idaho.
1818 to 1821 - A French-Canadian trapper passed through the Malad
Valley between 1818 and 1821 with a party of trappers. The river was
named
"Malade" because some of the trappers
became sick, and they mistakenly
attributed the illness to the water.
1833 - Boise Basin discovered by French explorers (Captain B.L.E. Bonneville
and his party of French trappers)
1834 - Fort Boise built by Hudson's Bay Company. François Payette, a French Canadian fur
trader was put in charge.
1843 - The first Catholic Church in Idaho was built by Father Nicolas Point
De Smet, S.J., a Belgian by
birth, on the St. Joe River, near the present
town of St. Maries
1852
- French Canadians discover gold on the Pend Oreille
River.
1891
- Emma Green, daughter of a French Creole woman,
designed the Idaho state seal.

Nearly 19% of Idaho's exports now go to Francophone
countries. 23,000 Idaho jobs are supported by
Canada-U.S. trade. Idaho, as the nation’s chief producer of potatoes, exported
$69 million of agricultural products in 2004 to Canada. Export-supported jobs
linked to manufacturing account for an estimated 4.7 percent of Idaho's total
private-sector employment. Over one-seventh of all manufacturing workers in
Idaho depend on exports for their jobs. 1,290 companies exported from Idaho
locations in 2004, with more than four-fifths, small and medium-sized
enterprises.
Idaho's Foreign Direct Investment (relatively small):
2002 figures show only 3.4% of Idaho's workforce
employed by foreign-owned companies, making the state 37th nationally in this
category. In 2003, however,
foreign-controlled companies employed 11,200 workers in Idaho, accounting for
5.1 percent of total manufacturing employment, with two thirds of the top five
investor nations Francophone.
In Idaho 22,624 acres of agricultural land is foreign owned.
