In Loving Memory . . . Jan Sinclair Johanson
Last Wednesday, May 23rd Jan passed away just two weeks after her husband Brent. Jan was, for well over a decade, an IATLC Board member who had a dream that language professionals needed to have an effective network and good professional development. In the fledgling years, she and the other Board members literally pulled money from purses, wallets, and checkbooks to keep the organization afloat and to pay the bills for the conference in Twin Falls. She was irked when some of our in-state presenters wanted compensation for sharing their "expertise." There was a "nonsense" sliding off her tongue as she exhorted colleagues to give to each other, the profession, and the students. Jan was a supporter of the language camps in southern Idaho, and a non-stop conversationalist with a true love for Spanish and classroom scholarship. Jan's calls of frustration and concern arrived anywhere from 10 PM to 3 AM. My wife developed a phone relationship with Jan when I was still at the office or running off to some meeting. She expected the best of each of us and she wasn't afraid to tell us of expectations met or still needing to be met. Her signature raspy voice is silenced, but the echo reverberates for those of us who know what she gave to IATLC.
